Interested in real estate?

I live in Kentucky and I'm interested in real estate. I would like to be an appraiser but I've heard that its hard to find a job. Does anyone know if appraisers are paid 100% commission or is there a base salary. How hard is it to find a mentor? Is it less stressful than becoming an agent? I'm extremely motivated but I know that the market is bad.
