Phonics question?

My son is in 1st grade and has a phonics question. How do you "mark" consonant blends? He had been using a squiggly line, but his teacher told him that it was not a marking even though that is the way he had done it all year. She said he is supposed to use a smiley face. Please help! Thanks!
