yes it does. The Cd 2+ is ionizing and losing electrons... Anytime there is a charge on the ion like the Cd, then they electrons are moving from atom to atom as they each try and fill their valence shell. Basically the fact that the Cd2+ has a charge is what starts the reaction as soon as it comes into contact.
